This term refers to the creation of an air gap between the structural sheathing/exterior insulation, and the siding assembly. This "air gap" for lack of a better word can be achieved in a number of different ways, but ultimately it serves to create a drainage plane behind the siding. Drainage plane is aided by the stack affect of low and high pressure air movement from high to low. This air movement will keep the siding dry preventing premature rot and mold.
